Opie for Mac

Your actions, around the cursor.

Hold a key and the Ring opens at your pointer. Flick toward an action and let go to run it.

System actions

The Mac controls you use every day.

Dark Mode, Hide the Dock, Lock Screen, Force Quit and more, in one Ring.

App Rings

Each app gets its own Ring.

Press the same key in any app, and Opie opens the Ring for that app. 14 apps come with one ready, from Xcode and VS Code to Slack, Obsidian and Zoom. You can make one for any other app.

Many Rings

More Rings on the same key.

Keep holding the key and scroll to switch Rings. Keep one for everyday switches, one for work and one for apps.

Media Ring

Control the music that's playing.

Play, pause, skip and shuffle what's already playing on your Mac. Opie isn't a music player. The music stays in its own app.

Convert

Convert files from Finder.

Select a file in Finder and pick a format. The new file appears next to the original. Conversion runs on your Mac, so nothing is uploaded.

Actions

More than 50 actions built in.

Search every action.

Type a word to find a built-in action, a keystroke, a Shortcut or an app.

What a Slice can do.

Besides the built-in actions, a Slice can send a keystroke, run a Shortcut or a script, or open an app.

Keystrokes. Put ⌘⇧4, or any other shortcut, on a Slice. Opie presses the keys for you.

Shortcuts. Run anything you built in the Shortcuts app. If you rename it there, the Slice still works.

Scripts. Bash or AppleScript. A script can read the selected text, the clipboard or the Finder selection.

Apps. Open an app, or switch to it if it's already running.

Organize

Organize your actions.

Groups

Groups for related actions.

A Group holds up to eight actions. Point at it and they open around it.

Practice mode
fn

Practice first.

Try the real Ring in practice mode. Nothing runs until you turn it off.

A key for each Ring.

Give each Ring its own key, or put them all on one key and scroll between them.

Make it yours

Make it look and work your way.

Themes and colors.

Pick a theme and a palette, and give any action its own color. Show names on the Ring or hide them.

[[ring]]
name = "Everyday"
binding = "fn"
slices = [
  "dark-mode",
  "airpods",
  "lock",
]

Your setup, in plain text.

All your Rings are saved in one readable file in ~/.config/opie. Put it in Git, sync it, or copy it to your next Mac.

Trust

Built for macOS.

Native

Written in Swift for macOS 26. It isn't a web app.

Notarized

Signed and notarized by Apple.

No account

Your Rings, scripts, files and clipboard stay on your Mac.

Small

It lives in the menu bar and does nothing until you hold the key.

Questions

Good to know.

What does Opie cost?

Nothing. Opie is free, and everything it does today stays free. Only some new features we add later may be paid.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac running macOS 26 or later.

What does it ask permission for?

Accessibility and Input Monitoring, so a held key can open your Ring in any app. Other permissions, like Automation to read the Finder selection, only when an action needs them.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Your Rings, actions and conversions all run on your Mac.

What does it send?

Never what you type, run or convert, and no account. The only thing Opie sends is anonymous usage counts through TelemetryDeck: who opened the app, which Rings and Slices are used, and how many flicks a day. It does not identify you.

How do I uninstall it?

Quit it and move it to the Trash. Your Rings stay in ~/.config/opie, in case you come back.
